The first drone was invented more than 70 years ago. Nikola Tesla's inventions, the Ruston Propctor Aerial Target and the Radioplane OQ-2, were among the first drones to be created. They still remain one of the most innovative unmanned aircraft vehicles fifty years later. But who was the original inventor of the drone? How did they get there? Here's a look into the history of drones.

Nikola Tesla's invention

Nikola Tesla invented a flying device called the "Kettering Bug" over a century ago. The unmanned aerial vehicle (or UAV) was intended to be used in war but never saw combat. The Kettering Buggy was finished too late for the war, and it performed poorly in its tests. The Ketteringbug had no remote control. It was preprogrammed to fly certain distances before deployment. Tesla's fear of the unmanned machine was never fully acknowledged.

Ruston Proctor Aerospace Target

The first ever drone was built using a radio-guided system. It was originally intended for military use. It was inspired by the RC technology developed by Nikola Tesla. The Ruston Proctor Aerial target was not used in combat, despite its initial design. Its development helped create other military drones, and led to the Kettering Bug being the first unmanned commercially-available aerial vehicle.

Radioplane OQ-2

In the 1930s, the US military began developing and producing unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones. Reginald Denny developed the Radioplane OQ-2 drone. Reginald Denny hoped these drones would be useful in training anti-aircraft gunners as well as other military personnel. Walter Righter was the original owner of the design. Denny began to market the RC model under the name "Dennymite" to hobbyists. The RP-4, or Radioplane OQ-2 as it became known later, was developed into the Radioplane OQ-2. It was used to shoot down planes. During World War II, fifteen thousand radio controlled drones were purchased by the Army.

Karem's Albatross

The prototype for a drone called the Albatross was designed by Karem, an Israeli aerospace engineer. He was one the few Israeli engineers that built a drone. In the 1970s, he immigrated to the United States and built several prototypes, including the Amber drone, which was eventually made into a drone called the Predator. Because of the success and popularity of his drone, he was known as "Drone father". General Atomics purchased him and his group of leaders after they went bankrupt. They collaborated in the development of ultra-long endurance UAVs. The Predator was born.


GNAT-750

GNAT-750 stands for General Atomics Tactic Unmanned Aircraft Systems. It is a reconnaissance drone. Developed in the United States in the late 1980s, this system was originally intended for foreign sales. GNAT-750 made its first flight in 1989. Because it hovered at a low speed, the UAV could not be tracked by air defense radios.

Predator

The day following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Predator was already headed for Uzbekistan. Clarke's recommendation was ignored by the Bush government, who however was slow to take action. Although President Clinton had not yet designated the Taliban terrorist organization, other government officials were concerned about geopolitical repercussions from targeting civilian targets. The Predator, an armed Predator, was quickly rushed to the air base near Afghanistan after 9/11. The first Hellfire missile was fired by a Predator.

How do you clean your drone?

These are some important things to remember before cleaning your drone. This guide will help you make sure that you get the most out of your drone.

  1. Be sure to have all the tools you need. Be sure to have everything you require before you begin any task. A soft toothbrush (or a toothbrush), and a cleaning solution (we recommend using WD40).
