Drones can be used to fight ISIS

Quadcopters

While the United States, Russia, and other countries want to use more modern aircraft, Ukraine does not have the same resources to train its soldiers on these aircraft. The Ukrainians may have been trained in Western countries on vehicles and aircraft but they do not have the same training for drones. Ukrainians are accustomed to older equipment like trucks so drones make it easier to use. Drones can be operated by soldiers without the need for pilots. Drones feature a user-friendly interface similar to that found in videogames.

Aerorozvidka

To combat ISIS in Eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military has a unique strategy: octocopters with thermal cameras are used for nighttime missions. Some drones are fitted with anti-tank weapons and even have the capability to light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable, and can carry as much 11 lbs payload. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began as an IT enthusiast group. It has since evolved into a military air reconnaissance unit. The organization's first mission was as a civilian drone company, but over time, it evolved into a full-fledged unit with its own head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka relies upon crowdfunding and donations to maintain its existence since many of its components are manufactured in the US.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. The US Air Force developed these unmanned aerial vehicles in response to Ukrainian needs. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade is a small drone with a 40-kilometer range. It can be launched from a tube. The Switchblade, unlike Bayraktar drones can strike a Russian convoy up to 6 miles away. These small aircraft can set up quickly in a conflict like Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly much faster than the Bayraktar (current U.S. ally).

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. The delivery of 121 unmanned aircraft called "Phoenix Ghosts", which is intended to terrorize Russian forces, is part of the package. These aircraft can hover over areas for 30- to 40 minutes and are equipped to carry warheads and cameras. The Switchblade is a hovering munition weighing 5.5 pounds that can destroy tanks and armored vehicles.

These small, lightweight aircrafts have a powerful, low flying gimbal that allows them to fly from air, land or sea. Any advantage that an opponent has in the air battle is crucial in a conflict such as this. The Russian kamikaze drones are a direct threat. This capability will be crucial to Ukraine's army, as it can break Russian sieges or attack command-and control nodes. Although such capabilities could be a liability for both sides it could make a significant difference in the battlefield and help Ukraine emerge victorious.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia has begun integrating its ZALA KYB loitering munitions into the military arsenal of the country. These drones can use deadly loitering munitions similar to bazookas. The use of loitering drones may lead to the proliferation of these autonomous killing machines in black markets. This is something observers and pundits are concerned about. What can the U.S. do?

According to Kirby, the U.S. government has dispatched more than 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to help Kiev fight Russian forces. The Switchblade drone measures 5.5lbs and can hover above an area for anywhere from thirty to forty minute. It's equipped with a camera. It has the mission to take down opposition forces in Ukraine.
